PROJECT: Urban Art-Deco Living/ Dining Area-PART ONE

With sweeping views of downtown NYC, this New Jersey apartment needed to be nothing less than fabulous. My client loves the finer things in life and wanted to have some fun with her new home. Luxury and comfort didn't have to be compromised here. Also, this space features a custom bar wall with mirrored glass backdrop and other custom display/backdrops.

I could not wait to get started with brainstorming ideas boards for this space. I was WAY off when I read on her questionnaire that she wanted blush pink with modern woods, lucite and brass. I'll spare you the pink-overload and dive right into my client's decision to minimizer the pink and up the brass.

Along with creating three idea boards, I created additional visual images to help portray my ideas for the custom furnishings. I focused a great deal on incorporating any existing items she owns and planned to bring along with her.

I created this inspiration collage to start the conversation on what she had in mind for the bar wall which will house her collection of fine liquors she receives from her business ventures and personal favorites.

Another feature I was dying to include was a way to display her vintage camera collection. I originally wanted to place the camera display on the TV wall, but later decided against it. All I knew was that I wanted to have them viewable when guests came to visit.

I was like,

"Yes, we HAVE to find a way to put these babies on display!"

I created this mock-up as an idea for the TV wall. I love the idea of dramatic spaces and thankfully, my client does too, but she plans to have her room in a similar scheme. She wanted her living/dining area to be airy and light with lots of opportunity for the natural light to reflect on the hard surfaces.

"Shine bright like a diamond..."

Blush pink with gray and gold never looked so good!

During the concept review, I told her,

"After viewing your Pinterest boards and reading your feedback, I got the vibe of an Art Deco era New York City. Lots of brass/gold accents strategically placed with warm, calm tones and mirrored furnishings. With your stunning views of New York, it feels like you never left."

& she agreed!

Unfortunately, those graffiti Brocade throw pillows from West Elm JUST went out of stock after I made the concept. She loved them as much as I did... I had to find a replacement pillow, but none were as perfect as that one.

We quickly moved right on into the layout phase which included a 2-D rendering and floor plan. Here are the three rendering views I made:

Look at this gleaming bar wall!

Under-shelf lighting, mirrored glass panels and custom acrylic shelving all will let the natural light shine through and will reflect the surrounding views. I can imagine my client hosting get-togethers here where this wall will be one of the show-stoppers in the space.

The wall where the tv is mounted will have a custom bone inlay backdrop creating a unique texture for the artwork she finds locally and frames from her collection to be displayed on.
